When you stay at Clanwilliam Lodge, there are many quaint villages in just more than an hour’s drive from Clanwiliam. Wupperthal is one of them and a “must see”.
72km from Clanwilliam, in the remote TraTra valley, lies the picturesque Moravian (Rhenish) Mission Station of Wupperthal. Activities in Wupperthal center around the ‘velskoene’ (shoe) factory, rooibos tea farming and the Mission Station itself, which was founded by the grandfather of the Afrikaans poet, Louis Leipoldt.
Walk around this village filled with traditional thatched white-washed cottages and perhaps enjoy some lunch at Lekkerbekkie coffee shop.
You can combine a visit to Wupperthal with the Sevilla Rock Art Trail and Louis Leipoldt’s grave a brief stop at the English man's grave right next to the road (It is recommended to pay a quick visit but do not expect much more) and the famous Soldier Head - Rock formation this you will find on the same bypass road as Leipoldt's grave.
During the spring flower season, you can spend time in the Biedouw valley on your return from Wupperthal.
